Intensive Care Unit

Bueno was recently rescued in the Adelaide Hills after having been hit by car. He was spotted sitting at the base of a tree and bleeding. When our rescue team arrived he had fled high up a tree overhanging a busy road and was unable to use one of his front paws. The police arrived to assist us with traffic control due to the high speed zone and poor visibility in rain and fog. Bueno’s finger was badly broken and he was in shock. His finger needed to be amputated and he has been recovering in the ICU at the AKR Clinic. Koalas can function well after losing a finger provided it isn’t a thumb. When Bueno has recovered he will move to our rehabilitation section where we have a tree gym giving him an opportunity to practice climbing and build up strength before release.

Hamish is one of many koalas in the Intensive Care Unit at the AKR Clinic. Hamish appears to have been hit by car and sustained soft tissue injuries to his leg. He will require long term treatment and rehabilitation with the aim of releasing him back into the urban wild. AKR rescues and treats 40-50 new koala admissions every month and mostly due to road trauma.
