Mums and Joeys

AKR rescued Tori and her joey Benji in the Adelaide Hills. It was the middle of the night, cold and raining when they were left on the roadside after having been hit by car. We didn’t think Tori would make it back to the the AKR Clinic. After being treated for shock both mother and joey were x-rayed and cleared of fractures. Tori has been in a critical condition due to head trauma. She has brain damage and we’ve been patiently waiting to see if she will recover. Tori initially required IV fluids, syringe feeding and frequent bed changes. Despite her condition she has been aware of what’s going on around her. Benji is able to drink milk from his mum and she has been able to hold him. We are not giving up on this beautiful mum and we’re hopeful she’ll continue to make progress.

Sophia and Lou are some of the female koalas in the maternity ward at the AKR Clinic. Sophia is a young, first time mum requiring relocation to a safer home. Lou is a bushfire victim also needing relocation as her home is now gone. They hadn’t met previously but are now best friends sharing mothering duties. When their condition has improved and their joeys bigger and stronger they will be released together into the wild.
